What are Dental Bridges?
Dental bridges are a great way to replace missing teeth in a smile. They’re a non-removable appliance that are highly durable and can last several years if taken care of properly. At Sycamore Creek Dental, we recommend porcelain bridges for patients who are missing one or more neighboring teeth.
There are several types of bridges that are available – the most popular being the “traditional bridge”. This bridge is made of porcelain fused to metal and consists of two crowns that go over teeth neighboring the gap to support the missing tooth (or teeth). Known as a pontic, this prosthetic tooth is used to fill the gaps left behind by missing teeth. Other bridge options include:
- Maryland Bridge
- Cantilever Bridge
The Maryland Bridge, also known as a resin-bonded bridge or Maryland bonded bridge, are made up of porcelain or plastic teeth which are supported by framework made of metal or porcelain. The support is generally bonded to one side of the bridge.
In contrast to the Maryland Bridge, the Cantilever bridge is mostly used in areas that are under less stress or areas that contain abutment teeth solely on one side of the missing teeth (or tooth).
Speaking with your Corona general dentist can help determine which dental bridge option is the best choice for your smile.
Why Should You Get A Dental Bridge?
Dental bridges are an affordable choice for replacing missing teeth and can help restore an individual’s confidence to smile again. There are various reasons for investing in a dental bridge such as:
- Restoring your smile
- Restoring chewing and speaking ability
- Preventing remaining teeth from moving out of position
- Helping maintain facial shape
- Filling in gaps in smile
- Upgrading from a removable partial denture to a permanent dental appliance
How is a Dental Bridge Placed?
Dental bridges are usually placed in two appointments or more, depending on the patient’s oral health. During the first visit, healthy teeth on either side of the gap will be prepared for crown placement. The procedure consists of numbing the teeth and removing a portion of your enamel so that the crown fits properly.
After the teeth have been prepared, we’ll take an impression of your smile and send it to a dental laboratory to fabricate the bridge that will restore your smile. As we wait for your bridge to be made, we’ll create a temporary bridge for you to wear so that you’re never without a complete smile.
During the second phase of the procedure, your Corona dentist will check, adjust, and cement the permanent bridge in order to achieve the perfect fit. However, not all dentists may automatically cement the permanent bridge. Dr. Nguyen may opt to have it cemented at a later time – giving your teeth and tissue time to adjust to the new bridge.
In order to help with the recovery, your dentist will instruct you on how to care for your teeth after the procedure. This may include instructions on how to properly brush and floss, as well as, paying frequent visits to your dentist.
